Extra Credit Options

Due: May 5

Choose 1 of the following:

Option 1: Illustrate a Thought Experiment

A physical copy of Julian Baggini’s book The Pig That Wants To Be Eaten is on reserve at Pius Library. Go to the checkout table to request the book.

You will not be able to check the book out for long, but the thought experiments are very short, so scan or take photos of the pages you need.

Choose one of the thought experiments from the book (preferably one we did not cover in class) and illustrate it with your preferred medium (a sketch, a painting, digital art, etc.). I’m also open to AI gen submissions. If you used AI to prepare the artwork, please link to the service you used and include your prompt (e.g., midjourney.com, leonardo.ai, starryai.com, etc.)

In addition to the artwork, you must write a 300-word paragraph explaining the relationship between your artwork and the thought experiment. For example explanations, read the preface to Philosophy Illustrated.

Make sure to include:

  • Your name
  • The name of the thought experiment (as it appears in Baggini’s book)
  • Your artwork
  • Your 300-word explanation
  • If you used gen-AI, include:
    • a link to the service you used
    • the prompt you used to generate the art

You can turn in a physical copy of your artwork and explanation to my mailbox in Adorjan 130. Alternatively, you can also submit a digital copy to the extra credit assignment on Canvas. If you’re working with a physical medium, scan or to take a high-quality photo of your art for upload. Please save your file as a JPG, PNG, or PDF.

Option 2: Pop-Culture Argument Evaluation

Identify a philosophically interesting argument from a popular source (e.g., a scene from a film, song lyrics, a political speech) and complete a 4th argument evaluation. Include a copy of the source with your evaluation. Click here for the argument evaluation template.

Make sure to include:

  • Your name
  • Your source (either a copy of your source or a link to it)
  • Your Argument Evaluation (it can be typed or handwritten)

You can turn in a physical copy of your argument evaluation to my mailbox in Adorjan 130. Alternatively, you can also submit a digital copy to extra credit assignment on Canvas.
